In everything, there are always basics. Web hosting is of course, not exempted to this.
When it comes to web hosting, one basic rule to always consider is to never rely on one or two pieces of advice when purchasing hosting services. No matter how good the recommendation seems to be, always look for a second opinion, especially if you are looking for linux hosting or even for windows hosting. A lot of people in the web does not really have any direct experiences in hosting and could possibly just stating something that they only read about in other web sites.
Second, do not trust a host that cannot seem to correctly manage your bills and payments. Keep in mind that outages are always a possibility. If your host cannot properly compensate you from the downtimes that they have, it is not a good place to be in and better look for something else.
Third, if the outages are frequent, it is time to jump ship and look for a better provider because it will not get better any time soon. Plus, you would definitely lose more than they lose anything if you stay with your host because they still get paid, but you cannot get your return of investment if your web site is down.
